The Ultimate Dhaka Food Guide: Must-Try Dishes

You're in Dhaka for WordCamp Dhaka 2025 and wondering what to eat? Oh, you’re in for a treat! The city’s food scene is a runaway train of flavors. Whether you want authentic street food, traditional Bengali fare, or something fancy, we’ve got you covered.

Here are the top picks, plus where to try them so you can hit the best spots without wandering too much.

Dhaka's Must-Try Dishes (and Why They're Special)

DishWhat Makes It Special
Kacchi BiryaniFragrant basmati rice cooked with marinated meat (usually mutton), layered, sealed, and slow-cooked. A Dhaka classic.
Fuchka / Pani PuriCrisp hollow shells filled with potato, chickpeas, and tamarind water. Tangy, spicy, crunchy, street-snack bliss.
ChotpotiFuchka’s cousin: peas, potatoes, onions, eggs, and chutneys. A warm, super comforting dish often eaten from small bowls.
Hilsa Fish (Ilish)The national fish. Fried, steamed, or cooked in mustard. If in season, don’t miss this delicacy.
Bhuna Khichuri
Rice and lentils slow-cooked, sometimes with meat or vegetables. The ultimate rainy-day comfort food.
Bakarkhani
A thick, slightly sweet, flaky flatbread from Old Dhaka; perfect with a cup of tea.
Shahi Jilapi
Giant, syrupy-sweet fried dough (jilapi) from Old Dhaka. A must for anyone with a sweet tooth.
BorhaniA spiced yogurt drink. Cool and cleansing, great after a heavy meal like biryani or polao.

Where to Eat in Dhaka (Neighborhood Guide)

To get the most authentic and local feel, try these areas:

  • Old Dhaka / Puran Dhaka: The heart of traditional food. Head here for biryani, hilsa, bakarkhani, and jilapi. Look for legends like Grand Nawab, Haji Biryani, and Nazira Bazar.
  • Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Khilgaon: Strong street-food presence, especially evening stalls. This is your spot for the best fuchka, chotpoti, and momos.
  • Bailey Road / Banani / Gulshan / Dhanmondi: Better for more upscale, fusion, or restaurant-style options. These areas are often better bets if you want easier access or are looking for generally better hygiene standards.

Quick Tips & Cautions

  • Street Food Safety: Pick stalls with high turnover (lots of customers) so the food is always fresh.
  • Spice Alert: Dhaka food can get fiery! If you’re not used to heavy spice, ask for “kom jhal” (less spicy). Otherwise, brace yourself, your taste buds will dance, but so might your stomach.
  • Water is Key: Always use bottled water. Avoid eating raw salads or vegetables that might have been washed with unsafe water.
